There are several different series of manga (comic books) and anime (T.V. cartoons) based on Dragon Quest. Some of them are based on the games directly while others are original characters based in a Dragon Quest world (i.e. a world with Slimes). Unfortunately DQ manga and anime is extremely limited in the North American market, with only 13 episodes of “Abel Yuusha” being aired in English and a French translation of the 'Dai no Daibouken' manga (available only in France and Québec).

There exists 3 different anime series based on Dragon Quest (with several movies based on them as well) and over 9 distinct series (featuring several sub-series at times) of manga... In Japan anyway…
